The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for non-cellular polypropylene film exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, non-cellular polypropylene film exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (X tons), with an 11% share.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Thailand ($X) and Australia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for non-cellular polypropylene film exported from Malaysia worldwide, together accounting for 45% of total exports. Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese) and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +19.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average non-cellular polypropylene film export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-cellular polypropylene film imports to Malaysia, together accounting for 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, the United States, Indonesia, South Korea, Australia, Japan and India, which together accounted for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Australia (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip to Malaysia, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+6.3% per year) and South Korea (+26.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average non-cellular polypropylene film import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
