Packaging Materials Market Size in Malaysia
The Malaysian packaging materials market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild decrease. Packaging materials consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, packaging materials production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 15%. Packaging materials production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of packaging materials decreased by -21.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 74%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, packaging materials exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 80%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for packaging materials exports from Malaysia, with a 26% share of total exports. Moreover, packaging materials exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (X tons), with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China amounted to +13.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+5.8% per year) and Singapore (-9.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Australia ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the largest markets for packaging materials exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 43% share of total exports. Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia, the Philippines and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
Among the main countries of destination, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +18.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2022, the amount of packaging materials imported into Malaysia rose slightly to X tons, surging by 1.9% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
In value terms, packaging materials imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Japan (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of packaging materials imports to Malaysia, together accounting for 46% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), China, Vietnam, Thailand, New Zealand, Sweden, Australia, India and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +41.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest packaging materials suppliers to Malaysia were Japan ($X), China ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together accounting for 40% of total imports. South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Sweden, New Zealand, the United States, Australia and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +33.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 23%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
