Exports from Malaysia

In 2022, exports of plums and sloes from Malaysia dropped slightly to X tons, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 352%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for plum and sloe exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, plum and sloe exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore totaled +19.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+3.3% per year) and Indonesia (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and India ($X) were the largest markets for plum and sloe exported from Malaysia worldwide, together comprising 56% of total exports.

Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +34.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plum and sloe export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of plums and sloes, when their volume increased by 1.4% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 16%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons), China (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of plum and sloe imports to Malaysia, together comprising 76% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest plum and sloe suppliers to Malaysia were South Africa ($X), China ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 67% of total imports.
