Canned Food Market Size in Malaysia
The Malaysian canned food market surged to $X in 2021, rising by 25% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -15.7% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of canned food were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned food exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight setback. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) were the main destinations of canned food exports from Malaysia, with a combined 46% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Indonesia, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Kuwait, Qatar and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Brunei Darussalam ($X) were the largest markets for canned food exported from Malaysia worldwide, together accounting for 53% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Kuwait, the Philippines, Indonesia, Qatar, Pakistan, Taiwan (Chinese) and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2020, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -13.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2020, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, approx. X tons of canned food were imported into Malaysia; which is down by -5.7% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, canned food imports fell to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Singapore (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned food imports to Malaysia, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, the Netherlands, Indonesia, New Zealand, the United States and Australia, which together accounted for a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +25.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned food suppliers to Malaysia were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +30.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2020, the average canned food import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2020 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
