In 2021, supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -13.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 495% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cows skin imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 780%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Myanmar (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cows skin to Malaysia, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, cows skin imports from Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X kg), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Myanmar totaled +21.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-14.2% per year) and Italy (+28.4% per year).

The average cows skin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -25.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 171% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+51.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
