Recovered Paper Market Size in Malaysia

In 2022, the Malaysian recovered paper market decreased by -19.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, recovered paper production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Recovered paper production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Malaysia

In 2022, approx. X tons of recovered paper were exported from Malaysia; picking up by 4.1% compared with 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, recovered paper exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Singapore (X tons), India (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of recovered paper exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 92% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), India ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the largest markets for recovered paper exported from Malaysia worldwide, together comprising 90% of total exports.

India, with a CAGR of +36.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average recovered paper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Malaysia

After seven years of growth, overseas purchases of recovered paper decreased by -26.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 125%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, recovered paper imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 135% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of recovered paper to Malaysia, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, recovered paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), twofold. Australia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +36.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+25.7% per year) and Australia (+10.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest recovered paper suppliers to Malaysia were the United States ($X), the UK ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. Singapore, Japan, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +71.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average recovered paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 35%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
