Overall, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -3.3% against 2019 indices. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports from Malaysia, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Japan totaled +5.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+21.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.8% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports from Malaysia, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Japan amounted to +3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+19.6% per year) and China (+25.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
Refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports into Malaysia shrank to X tons in 2021, waning by -13% compared with 2020. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 174% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest refractory bricks, blocks and tiles supplier to Malaysia, with a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (X tons), with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-2.4% per year) and Thailand (-12.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles to Malaysia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 3.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-10.3% per year) and Thailand (-9.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
