Paddy Rice Market Size in Malaysia

The Malaysian paddy rice market reduced to $X in 2021, shrinking by -12.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of paddy rice in Malaysia dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 2.7%. Over the period under review, the average paddy rice yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The paddy rice harvested area in Malaysia was estimated at X ha in 2021, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2.1%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the paddy rice harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia

In 2021, overseas shipments of paddy rice were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant curtailment. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Myanmar (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) were the main destinations of paddy rice exports from Malaysia.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +8.1%).

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from Malaysia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Myanmar stood at -20.0%.

Export Prices by Country

The average paddy rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Paddy Rice Imports

Imports into Malaysia

For the fifth year in a row, Malaysia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of paddy rice, which decreased by -33.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 991% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 530%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Malaysia, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, paddy rice imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sixfold. Bangladesh (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam amounted to -12.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-34.4% per year) and Bangladesh (-32.9% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Malaysia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Vietnam amounted to -9.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-34.5% per year) and Thailand (-49.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average paddy rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, paddy rice import price increased by +23.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+19.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
