In 2021, shipments abroad of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) decreased by -40.5% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 207%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 161%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports from Malaysia, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (X tons), with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +181.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+21.4% per year) and South Korea (+9.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) exports from Malaysia, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +134.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+45.6% per year) and Singapore (+25.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average non-decaffeinated roasted coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports into Malaysia totaled X tons, approximately equating 2020 figures. Overall, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 86%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee to Malaysia, accounting for a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), twofold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia totaled +20.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+0.9% per year) and Vietnam (+44.6% per year).
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), India ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee suppliers to Malaysia, together accounting for 47% of total imports. Vietnam, Italy, the United States, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, China, Taiwan (Chinese) and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +50.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average non-decaffeinated roasted coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
