The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Indonesia (X tons) was the main destination for technical textiles exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, technical textiles exports to Indonesia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cambodia (X tons), with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Indonesia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+7.0% per year) and Cambodia (+52.5% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Singapore ($X) were the largest markets for technical textiles exported from Malaysia worldwide, together comprising 42% of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +77.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average technical textiles export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Malaysia
Technical textiles imports into Malaysia skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, technical textiles imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of technical textiles to Malaysia, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, technical textiles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+1.0% per year) and the United States (-14.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of textile products and articles for technical uses to Malaysia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-3.0% per year) and the United States (-6.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average technical textiles import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, technical textiles import price increased by +34.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
