Sportswear Market Size in Malaysia

The Malaysian sportswear market rose markedly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a modest expansion. Sportswear consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The exports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sportswear exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 40%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X units) was the main destination for sportswear exports from Malaysia, with a 60% share of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +21.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-8.8% per year) and Italy (-10.5% per year).

The average sportswear export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, sportswear imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest sportswear supplier to Malaysia, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, sportswear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), fourfold. Indonesia (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.2% share.
