Exports from Malaysia
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of whisky, when their volume increased by 3.1% to X litres. In general, exports, however, faced a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 46%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, whisky exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X litres), Singapore (X litres) and Australia (X litres) were the main destinations of whisky exports from Malaysia, with a combined 76% share of total exports. The Netherlands, China, India, Vietnam and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +28.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Australia ($X) were the largest markets for whisky exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, the Netherlands, Vietnam, India and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 17%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +13.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whisky export price amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were imported into Malaysia; shrinking by -6.2% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whisky imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The UK (X litres), Singapore (X litres) and India (X litres) were the main suppliers of whisky imports to Malaysia, with a combined 73% share of total imports. The Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Australia (with a CAGR of +43.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to Malaysia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK stood at -6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+8.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average whisky import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, increasing by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the price for India ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
