Wine Market Size in Malaysia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Malaysian wine market, when its value increased by 18% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption saw a slight decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of wine exported from Malaysia skyrocketed to X litres, picking up by 36% on the year before. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 150%. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to China ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Malaysia

Wine imports into Malaysia reached X litres in 2021, flattening at 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wine imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Australia (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of wine to Malaysia, accounting for a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, wine imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X litres), threefold. In 2021, the average wine import price amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
