The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, man-made filament fabric exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main destinations of man-made filament fabric exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 85% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for man-made filament fabric exported from Malaysia were Turkey ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), together comprising 63% of total exports. Vietnam, Japan, India, the Philippines, the United States, Thailand, China and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +32.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average man-made filament fabric export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, approx. X tons of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers were imported into Malaysia; shrinking by -7.6% compared with 2020 figures. In general, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 43%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, man-made filament fabric imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +4.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of man-made filament fabric to Malaysia, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, man-made filament fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), threefold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+13.0% per year) and Indonesia (-2.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers to Malaysia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-3.9% per year) and Vietnam (+11.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average man-made filament fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
