The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, man-made filament fabric exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Turkey (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main destinations of man-made filament fabric exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 85% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for man-made filament fabric exported from Malaysia were Turkey ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), together comprising 63% of total exports. Vietnam, Japan, India, the Philippines, the United States, Thailand, China and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 43%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
