Champagne Market Size in Malta

In 2021, the Maltese champagne market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Malta recorded decline in overseas shipments of champagne, which decreased by -15.6% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, champagne exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Greece (X tons) was the main destination for champagne exports from Malta, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total exports.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of champagne increased by 9.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, champagne imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 56%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of champagne to Malta, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, champagne imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-7.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-23.7% per year).
