Exports from Malta

Libya (X tons) was the main destination for rice exports from Malta, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, rice exports to Libya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2018, the imports of rice into Malta stood at X tons, going up by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, rice imports, however, continue to indicate a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, rice imports attained their peak figure at X tons in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rice imports totaled $X in 2018. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2018; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2018 and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

The UK (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of rice imports to Malta, together comprising X% of total imports. Pakistan, the Netherlands, Belgium and the U.S. lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
