Abrasives Market Size in MENA
In 2021, the MENA's abrasives market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -2.1% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Abrasives Production in MENA
In value terms, abrasives production reduced modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 225%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, approx. X tons of abrasives (natural) were exported in MENA; increasing by 16% against 2020. In general, exports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, abrasives exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed strong growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to abrasives exports from Turkey stood at +13.9%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest abrasives supplier in MENA, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
In Turkey, abrasives exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.9% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 41% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Turkey amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.6%).
Abrasives Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of abrasives (natural), when their volume increased by 28% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, abrasives imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together mixing up a 34% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+26.5%), Egypt (+16.7%), Israel (+5.2%), Morocco (+4.5%), Tunisia (+3.8%) and Qatar (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +26.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.0%), Bahrain (-4.2%) and Kuwait (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Israel (+3.5 p.p.), Qatar (+2.6 p.p.), Iraq (+2.6 p.p.), Egypt (+1.9 p.p.), Morocco (+1.7 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+1.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kuwait (-5 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-9.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest abrasives importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X), together comprising 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by Qatar, Egypt, Kuwait, Morocco, Bahrain, Tunisia and Iraq, which together accounted for a further 23%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
