In 2021, the MENA's activated natural mineral products market decreased by -5.5% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Production of Activated Natural Mineral Products in MENA

In value terms, activated natural mineral products production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Activated natural mineral products exports amounted to X tons in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 59%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the largest exporter of activated natural mineral products in MENA, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports. Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +27.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Libya (+115,526.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +115,526.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+51 p.p.) and Libya (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-50.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest activated natural mineral products supplier in MENA, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +20.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+2.5% per year) and Libya (+44,578.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Activated Natural Mineral Products

Imports in MENA

Activated natural mineral products imports contracted to X tons in 2021, waning by -5.7% on the previous year. In general, imports showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the key importer of activated natural mineral products in MENA, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 32% of total imports in 2021. Algeria (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (8.4%), Saudi Arabia (8.1%), Tunisia (7.8%), the United Arab Emirates (7.4%) and Morocco (5.8%).

Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+6.5%), Tunisia (+4.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.4%), Morocco (+2.4%) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Algeria (+5.5 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.3 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+3.1 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+2.2 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -12.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest activated natural mineral products importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 42% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +6.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
