Alums Market Size in MENA

The MENA's alums market fell to $X in 2022, which is down by -2.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Alums Production in MENA

In value terms, alums production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA

Alums exports rose notably to X tons in 2022, increasing by 10% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 153% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, alums exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the major exporter of alums in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), committing a 35% share of total exports. Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +6.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest alums supplier in MENA, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +10.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+3.1% per year) and Iran (+1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -1.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, alums export price decreased by -5.7% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Alums Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, approx. X tons of alums were imported in MENA; remaining constant against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, alums imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) was the key importer of alums in MENA, committing 66% of total import. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), constituting an 8% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 51% of total imports. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Tunisia and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +23.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, alums import price decreased by -21.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
