Ammonium Chloride Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's ammonium chloride market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ammonium chloride production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Ammonium chloride exports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 77% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 151% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, ammonium chloride exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 70%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Iran (X tons) represented the key exporter of ammonium chloride, creating 59% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Jordan (5.5%) and Turkey (4.9%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.5% share of total exports.

Iran was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ammonium chloride exports, with a CAGR of +67.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Jordan (+40.7%), Egypt (+31.6%), Israel (+29.5%) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Iran (+56 p.p.) and Jordan (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -22.4% and -29.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Iran ($X) remains the largest ammonium chloride supplier in MENA, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Iran totaled +54.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.0% per year) and Turkey (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -12.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

For the third year in a row, MENA recorded growth in purchases abroad of ammonium chloride, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Turkey dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 66% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Israel (7.2%). Egypt (X tons), Iran (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Oman (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ammonium chloride imports, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+10.4%), Oman (+7.0%) and Israel (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iran (-13.9%) and Egypt (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+36 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-3 p.p.), Iran (-13.2 p.p.) and Egypt (-21.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ammonium chloride in MENA, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +14.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+7.5% per year) and Egypt (-10.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
