Production of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander in MENA
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
The country with the largest volume of anise, badian, fennel and coriander production was Turkey (X tons), comprising approx. 62% of total volume. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Iran (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Turkey totaled +38.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+3.7% per year) and Iran (+1.3% per year).
In 2022, the average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield in MENA expanded slightly to X tons per ha, growing by 1.6% against 2021. Overall, the yield posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 93% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the anise, badian, fennel and coriander harvested area in MENA shrank to X ha, falling by -2.1% on 2021. The total harvested area indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander harvested area increased by +2.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to anise, badian, fennel and coriander production attained the maximum at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of anise, badian, fennel and coriander exported in MENA reduced markedly to X tons, waning by -22% against the year before. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -23.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -4.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic represented the key exporter of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 40% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Turkey (15%), Iran (15%) and Morocco (8.7%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Syrian Arab Republic increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+9.0%), Iran (+7.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.9%), Morocco (+3.8%) and Egypt (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +9.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey and Iran increased by +4.8 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplying countries in MENA were Syrian Arab Republic ($X), Egypt ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 79% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +8.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, supplies from abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -5.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, namely the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, represented more than half of total import. Yemen (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Oman (X tons), Iran (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +25.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. Morocco, Egypt, Yemen, Algeria, Oman, Iran, Kuwait, Iraq and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Among the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +24.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 6.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
