Apple Market Size in MENA

The MENA's apple market fell to $X in 2021, which is down by -4.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Apple Production in MENA

In value terms, apple production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Turkey (X tons) remains the largest apple producing country in MENA, accounting for 46% of total volume. Moreover, apple production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Morocco (X tons), with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Turkey totaled +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-3.6% per year) and Morocco (+7.0% per year).

The average apple yield totaled X tons per ha in 2021, approximately reflecting the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of apples were harvested in MENA; with an increase of 2.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 5.4% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of apples increased by 79% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, apple exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 48% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together committing a 44% share of total exports. The following exporters - Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the apples exports, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+18.0%), Iran (+14.7%) and Israel (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Lebanon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+27 p.p.), Iran (+7.9 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Lebanon (-14.8 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (-20.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest apple supplier in MENA, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +22.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iran (+14.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+12.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of apples were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the main importers of apples, together achieving 71% of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Oman (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) - together made up 27% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest apple importing markets in MENA were Egypt ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports. Israel, Libya, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Yemen, Qatar, Palestine, Iraq and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +24.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
