Apricot Market Size in MENA

In 2022, the MENA's apricot market decreased by -6.9% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption showed a mild reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Apricot Production in MENA

In value terms, apricot production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Turkey (X tons) remains the largest apricot producing country in MENA, comprising approx. 51% of total volume. Moreover, apricot production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Algeria (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Iran (+0.6% per year) and Algeria (-3.5% per year).

The average apricot yield shrank modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 17%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the apricot yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of apricots were harvested in MENA; which is down by -1.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to apricot production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Apricot Exports

Exports in MENA

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of apricots, which increased by 7.5% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +33.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, apricot exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons), mixing up a 7.5% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to apricot exports from Turkey stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Jordan (+7.4%) and Lebanon (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey and Jordan increased by +5.8 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest apricot supplier in MENA, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +7.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+2.7% per year) and Lebanon (+0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Apricot Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, apricot imports in MENA dropped to X tons, shrinking by -5.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apricot imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +12.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 53%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Iraq was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 46% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Libya (7.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (5.5%). Kuwait (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Oman (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest apricot importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), Iraq ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Kuwait, Libya, Bahrain, Oman and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +12.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
