In 2021, the MENA's plaster article market decreased by -6.7% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +50.6% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Plaster Article Production in MENA
In value terms, plaster article production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +56.0% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Plaster Article Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2021, exports of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 19% compared with 2020. Overall, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, plaster article exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the major exporter of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster in MENA, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 47% of total exports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (19%) and the United Arab Emirates (8.8%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - together made up 5% of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+60.7%), Oman (+35.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+8.6%) and Saudi Arabia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +60.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Iran (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Oman (+16 p.p.), Turkey (+8 p.p.) and Egypt (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -7% and -7.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest plaster article supplier in MENA, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +14.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+2.9% per year) and Oman (+27.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Plaster Article Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, supplies from abroad of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, plaster article imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Palestine prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), comprising a 5.9% share of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Libya (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
Palestine was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster imports, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+22.2%), Israel (+21.7%), Libya (+8.1%), Bahrain (+6.5%), Jordan (+5.6%), Qatar (+4.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+1.3%) and Iraq (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Palestine (+41 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Jordan (-1.6 p.p.), Qatar (-3 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (-4.9 p.p.) and Iraq (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Iraq ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Qatar ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 38% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Israel, Kuwait, Jordan, Libya, Bahrain and Palestine, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Among the main importing countries, Kuwait, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Palestine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
