After four years of growth, the MENA's bacon and ham market decreased by -3.7% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Bacon And Ham Production in MENA

In value terms, bacon and ham production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -6.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 84%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, approx. X tons of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat were exported in MENA; growing by 1.8% on 2021. In general, exports recorded a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, bacon and ham exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), achieving a 7.6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lebanon (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +95.6% from 2012 to 2022. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Lebanon (-3.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (-15.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey increased by +86 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest bacon and ham supplier in MENA, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +65.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-8.4% per year) and Israel (-1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Bacon And Ham Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, supplies from abroad of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bacon and ham imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 77% of total imports in 2022. Iraq (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 4.8% share, followed by Turkey (4.6%). Qatar (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+36.0%), Qatar (+11.6%), Morocco (+8.0%) and Turkey (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates and Iraq increased by +6.9 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat in MENA, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($X), with a 3.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +9.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iraq (+39.9% per year) and Turkey (+16.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 17%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
