Banana And Plantain Market Size in MENA

After three years of growth, the MENA's banana and plantain market decreased by -44.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Banana And Plantain Production in MENA

In value terms, banana and plantain production contracted remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a deep reduction. Turkey (X tons) remains the largest banana and plantain producing country in MENA, accounting for 41% of total volume. Moreover, banana and plantain production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), twofold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Turkey totaled +14.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Morocco (+4.3% per year) and Saudi Arabia (0.0% per year).

The average banana and plantain yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 9.4% on the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 9.7%. Over the period under review, the banana and plantain yield reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of bananas and plantains in MENA dropped dramatically to X ha, with a decrease of -42.7% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 5.4%. In 2022, approx. X tons of bananas and plantains were exported in MENA; shrinking by -71% against the year before. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 347%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 440% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Yemen (X tons), distantly followed by Israel (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the key exporters of bananas and plantains, together generating 92% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +85.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Yemen ($X), Israel ($X) and Lebanon ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 79% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +51.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 35% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana and plantain export price increased by +51.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

Banana and plantain imports contracted remarkably to X tons in 2022, reducing by -50.7% against the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 43%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Algeria (X tons) and Iran (X tons) represented the key importers of bananas and plantains in MENA, together committing 43% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Iraq (X tons), Libya (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together held near 34% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of +23.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Iran ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Qatar, Turkey, Libya, Iraq, Tunisia, Palestine, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +25.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
