Beer Market Size in MENA

The MENA's beer market dropped to $X in 2022, falling by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a slight descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Beer Production in MENA

In value terms, beer production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 8%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA

Beer exports expanded notably to X tons in 2022, rising by 11% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), generating a 7.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 9.5% of total exports.

Exports from Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+11.3%), Morocco (+8.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lebanon (-7.7%) and Jordan (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+2.6 p.p.), Morocco (+2 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Jordan (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest beer supplier in MENA, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 3.4% share.

In Turkey, beer exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+2.7% per year) and Lebanon (-8.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 3.5%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Beer Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of beer imported in MENA declined to X tons, reducing by -14.5% on 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +31.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, beer imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 47% of total imports. Israel (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Iraq (12%), Bahrain (6.2%) and Morocco (4.9%). The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beer imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +11.3%. At the same time, Morocco (+25.6%), Qatar (+16.7%), Turkey (+14.0%) and Israel (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012-2022. Iraq and Bahrain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The United Arab Emirates (+19 p.p.), Morocco (+4 p.p.), Qatar (+2.2 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bahrain and Iraq saw its share reduced by -5.1% and -9.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in MENA, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 9.7% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, beer imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+9.5% per year) and Iraq (+1.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
