For the fifth year in a row, MENA recorded growth in overseas shipments of bituminous mixtures, which increased by 81% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
Iraq represented the key exporter of bituminous mixtures in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 48% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Iran (13%) and Oman (5.3%). Bahrain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +81.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Iraq ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Iran ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 87% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +68.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -6.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, approx. X tons of bituminous mixtures were imported in MENA; with an increase of 19% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, bituminous mixtures imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 170%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lebanon (X tons), generating a 10% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bituminous mixtures imports, with a CAGR of +66.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Israel (+11.6%), Qatar (+7.2%) and Oman (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Lebanon (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+77 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Qatar, Oman and Lebanon saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -2.9% and -67.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bituminous mixtures in MENA, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 5.7% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, bituminous mixtures imports expanded at an average annual rate of +47.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lebanon (-14.3% per year) and Qatar (-3.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -17.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 4.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
