Blueberry And Cranberry Market Size in MENA

In 2022, the MENA's blueberry and cranberry market increased by 0.7% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +64.6% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Blueberry And Cranberry Production in MENA

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 243%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Morocco (X tons) remains the largest blueberry and cranberry producing country in MENA, accounting for 82% of total volume. Moreover, blueberry and cranberry production in Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), fivefold.

In Morocco, blueberry and cranberry production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average yield of blueberries and cranberries in MENA soared to X tons per ha, picking up by 26% against 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the blueberry and cranberry yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the blueberry and cranberry harvested area in MENA declined to X ha, dropping by -10.8% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 36%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Blueberry And Cranberry Exports

Exports in MENA

For the eleventh year in a row, MENA recorded growth in shipments abroad of blueberries and cranberries, which increased by 23% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 88%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of blueberries and cranberries, namely Morocco, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blueberries and cranberries exports, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012 to 2022. Morocco (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) also remains the largest blueberry and cranberry supplier in MENA.

In Morocco, blueberry and cranberry exports increased at an average annual rate of +32.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -22.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Morocco.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Morocco amounted to -1.3% per year.

Blueberry And Cranberry Imports

Imports in MENA

For the eighth consecutive year, MENA recorded growth in overseas purchases of blueberries and cranberries, which increased by 2.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 73%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Turkey (6.2%). The following importers - Kuwait (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) - each finished at an 8.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +91.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest blueberry and cranberry importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +96.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, blueberry and cranberry import price increased by +22.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
