The MENA's market for broad beans and horse beans (dry) was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. The average broad bean and horse bean yield rose modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 1.6% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 25%. The level of yield peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The broad bean and horse bean harvested area totaled X ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to broad bean and horse bean production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, exports of broad beans and horse beans (dry) in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 19% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Egypt prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), creating a 6.6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+36.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+17.2%), Tunisia (+8.1%) and Turkey (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +36.6% from 2012-2022. Syrian Arab Republic (+5.7 p.p.) and Egypt (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest broad bean and horse bean supplier in MENA, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 4.5% share.

In Egypt, broad bean and horse bean exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Syrian Arab Republic (+28.9% per year) and Tunisia (+10.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of broad beans and horse beans (dry) increased by 8.8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +12.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Egypt prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together generating an 11% share of total imports. Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to broad bean and horse bean imports into Egypt stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Morocco (+55.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. Jordan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
