In 2021, shipments abroad of calcareous building stone was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcareous building stone exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of calcareous building stone, namely Iran, Iraq and Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), constituting a 12% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +111.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest calcareous building stone supplying countries in MENA were Iran ($X), Turkey ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), together comprising 82% of total exports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Palestine, Iraq and Tunisia, which together accounted for a further 15%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +79.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -26.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+18.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Calcareous Building Stone Imports
Imports in MENA
Calcareous building stone imports contracted notably to X tons in 2021, waning by -86.1% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 967% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, calcareous building stone imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 179% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Qatar was the key importer of calcareous building stone in MENA, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons), achieving a 15% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Qatar increased at an average annual rate of +83.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+87.2%), Lebanon (+20.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.5%) and Jordan (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +87.2% from 2012-2021. Qatar (+72 p.p.) and Turkey (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates and Jordan saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -50.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Jordan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcareous building stone in MENA, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.2% share.
In Jordan, calcareous building stone imports increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+0.9% per year) and Turkey (+62.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 404% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
