Camel Meat Market Size in MENA

The MENA's camel meat market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +3.8% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Camel Meat Production in MENA

In value terms, camel meat production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +5.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Saudi Arabia (X tons) remains the largest camel meat producing country in MENA, accounting for 52% of total volume. Moreover, camel meat production in Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Oman (X tons), with an 8.3% share.

In Saudi Arabia, camel meat production increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.6% per year) and Oman (+7.9% per year).

In 2022, the average camel meat yield in MENA dropped to X kg per head, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 4.5%. Over the period under review, the camel meat yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for camel meat production in MENA dropped slightly to X heads, which is down by -1.9% on 2021 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs at X heads in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Camel Meat Exports

Exports in MENA

After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of camel meat decreased by -11.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 189%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, camel meat exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 287%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of camel meat, namely the United Arab Emirates, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the camel meat exports, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) also remains the largest camel meat supplier in MENA.

In the United Arab Emirates, camel meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +48.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 43%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United Arab Emirates.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United Arab Emirates amounted to -1.6% per year.

Camel Meat Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, purchases abroad of camel meat decreased by -5.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 228% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel meat imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 212% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Oman (X tons) was the main importer of camel meat, generating 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), creating a 17% share of total imports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Oman was also the fastest-growing in terms of the camel meat imports, with a CAGR of +52.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+42.8%) and Morocco (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco and Oman increased by +17 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Oman ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported camel meat in MENA, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Oman totaled +51.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+3.5% per year) and Kuwait (+32.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
