Canary Seed Market Size in MENA

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a combined 99% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +391.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average canary seed yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 21% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 41%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of canary seed were harvested in MENA; dropping by -20.8% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 71%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Canary Seed Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, canary seed exports in MENA soared to X tons, picking up by 57% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 96%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canary seed exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 105% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 70% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (14%).
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +27.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+37.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +37.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+59 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-68 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest canary seed supplier in MENA, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +16.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-13.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+38.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -17.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 23%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Canary Seed Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, imports of canary seed in MENA declined to X tons, with a decrease of -4.5% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canary seed imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +69.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Algeria (X tons), distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Libya (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main importers of canary seed, together generating 80% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Turkey, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Libya and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of +19.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
