Canned Food Market Size in MENA
After two years of decline, the MENA's canned food market increased by 2.8% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -7.6% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Canned Food Production in MENA
In value terms, canned food production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -7.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Canned Food Exports
Exports in MENA
Canned food exports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, growing by 5.7% against 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, canned food exports rose to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 17%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of canned food, mixing up 52% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total exports. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the canned food exports, with a CAGR of +7.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+6.7%), Egypt (+6.0%), Morocco (+5.3%), Jordan (+3.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Lebanon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +8.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in MENA, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.
In Turkey, canned food exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+13.9% per year) and Egypt (+6.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 8%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Canned Food Imports
Imports in MENA
Canned food imports contracted to X tons in 2021, waning by -5.5% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned food imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons), distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the major importers of canned food, together achieving 67% of total imports. The following importers - Oman (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Libya (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.
Imports into Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Israel (+7.4%), Iraq (+4.8%), Oman (+4.7%), Kuwait (+3.0%), Yemen (+2.9%), Turkey (+2.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012-2021. Qatar and Jordan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lebanon (-1.5%), Libya (-2.7%) and Algeria (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iraq and Israel increased by +2.8 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned food in MENA, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with an 8.2% share.
In Saudi Arabia, canned food imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+1.7% per year) and Iraq (+5.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
