The MENA's carbonate market rose modestly to $X in 2021, surging by 4.3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, carbonate production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 462% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Carbonate exports rose significantly to X tons in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 99.9%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbonate exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 152%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carbonates and peroxocarbonates exports, with a CAGR of +42.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+26.1%) and Egypt (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Jordan (-14.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +70 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest carbonate supplier in MENA, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 3.9% share.

In Turkey, carbonate exports increased at an average annual rate of +48.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+7.6% per year) and Jordan (+2.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+19.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Carbonate Imports

Imports in MENA

Carbonate imports rose remarkably to X tons in 2021, increasing by 5.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) were the largest importers of carbonates and peroxocarbonates, together constituting 79% of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Israel (X tons), Oman (X tons), Libya (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +18.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Egypt ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Israel, Kuwait, Tunisia, Oman, Syrian Arab Republic, Qatar and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +14.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 6.3%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
