The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the carrot and turnip yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of carrots and turnips exported in MENA reduced to X tons, which is down by -2.5% compared with 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +46.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest carrot and turnip supplier in MENA, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 11% share.

In 2022, overseas purchases of carrots and turnips increased by 1.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +6.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the largest importers of carrots and turnips, together committing 93% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +42.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Qatar ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Kuwait, Israel, Oman, Iraq and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +48.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 8.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
