Cassava Market Size in MENA

The MENA's cassava market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cassava Production in MENA

In value terms, cassava production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 42%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Egypt (X tons) remains the largest cassava producing country in MENA, accounting for 97% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Egypt amounted to +1.5%.

Cassava Exports

Exports in MENA

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of cassava decreased by -20.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cassava exports, with a CAGR of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. Egypt (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+28 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -20.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest cassava supplier in MENA, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 6% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, cassava exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.7%).

Cassava Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of cassava imported in MENA declined to X tons, waning by -9.3% on the year before. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 973%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 231% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major importer of cassava in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons) and Qatar (X tons), together achieving a 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Bahrain (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cassava imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +6.9%. At the same time, Qatar (+22.4%), Oman (+6.3%) and Bahrain (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kuwait (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+10 p.p.) and Qatar (+7.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kuwait (-4.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava in MENA, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 14% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, cassava imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (+9.0% per year) and Qatar (+25.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 193%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
