From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cauliflower and broccoli yield in MENA stood at X tons per ha, remaining constant against the year before. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cauliflower and broccoli yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cauliflower and broccoli harvested area fell slightly to X ha in 2022, waning by -2.6% compared with the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in MENA

Cauliflower and broccoli exports shrank notably to X tons in 2022, declining by -21.4% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Iran represented the largest exporter of cauliflower and broccoli in MENA, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 41% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together creating a 56% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cauliflower and broccoli exports from Iran stood at +4.6%. At the same time, Morocco (+71.8%), Egypt (+15.7%) and Turkey (+14.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +71.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-4.7%), Syrian Arab Republic (-7.6%) and Jordan (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Iran (+22 p.p.), Turkey (+9.9 p.p.), Egypt (+9.8 p.p.) and Morocco (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic and Jordan saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -5.5% and -35.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest cauliflower and broccoli supplying countries in MENA were Iran ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 70% of total exports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +90.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MENA

Cauliflower and broccoli imports fell to X tons in 2022, declining by -9.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Iraq (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons) represented the main importer of cauliflower and broccoli in MENA, committing 90% of total import. It was distantly followed by Bahrain (X tons), achieving a 5.6% share of total imports. Lebanon (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cauliflower and broccoli in MENA, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 13% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, cauliflower and broccoli imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+6.9% per year) and Kuwait (+6.1% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
