From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, caviar (sturgeon) exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded buoyant growth. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (X tons), Israel (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together comprising a 24% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to caviar (sturgeon) exports from Turkey stood at +18.1%. At the same time, Iran (+24.3%), Israel (+3.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. Turkey (+21 p.p.) and Iran (+5.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Israel saw its share reduced by -9.8% and -9.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Israel ($X), Iran ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 90% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +15.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -21.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 89% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
Caviar (sturgeon) imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, growing by 115% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, caviar (sturgeon) imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the main importer of caviar (sturgeon), achieving 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together making up a 49% share of total imports. Egypt (X kg) and Morocco (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Qatar (+59.6%), Morocco (+8.8%) and Egypt (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +59.6% from 2012-2021. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Oman (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Israel, Morocco and Egypt increased by +21, +17, +7, +2.2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported caviar (sturgeon) in MENA, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled +5.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (-1.5% per year) and Oman (-14.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
