Exports in MENA
In 2021, overseas shipments of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) increased by 201% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 319% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 585%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), making up a 9.1% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +39.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+40.7%) and Lebanon (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +40.7% from 2012-2021. Turkey (+55 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon saw its share reduced by -4.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest non-wheat cereal pellets supplier in MENA, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
In Turkey, non-wheat cereal pellets exports expanded at an average annual rate of +32.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+42.8% per year) and Lebanon (+17.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, supplies from abroad of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Algeria was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons), together making up a 42% share of total imports. Iraq (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cereal pellets (excluding wheat) in MENA, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (+27.5% per year) and Algeria (-5.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -19% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-wheat cereal pellets import price decreased by -28.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
