In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 593%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Jordan (X tons) represented the main exporter of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), constituting 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together comprising a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sulphite wood pulp exports from Jordan stood at +13.2%. At the same time, Turkey (+19.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, the largest sulphite wood pulp supplying countries in MENA were Jordan ($X), Turkey ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, sulphite wood pulp imports in MENA soared to X tons, increasing by 19% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible expansion.
