Chestnut Market Size in MENA

The MENA's chestnut market reduced to $X in 2021, declining by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Chestnut Production in MENA

In value terms, chestnut production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) remains the largest chestnut producing country in MENA, comprising approx. 96% of total volume. Moreover, chestnut production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Saudi Arabia (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Turkey, chestnut production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021.

The average chestnut yield totaled X tons per ha in 2021, remaining stable against 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chestnut yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The chestnut harvested area reduced modestly to X ha in 2021, waning by -3.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to chestnut production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in MENA

Chestnut exports rose significantly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 104%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 114% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2021.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chestnuts exports, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012 to 2021. Turkey (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) also remains the largest chestnut supplier in MENA.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +8.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Turkey.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Turkey amounted to +1.2% per year.

Chestnut Imports

Imports in MENA

Chestnut imports dropped significantly to X tons in 2021, which is down by -27.4% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) represented roughly 74% of total imports in 2021. Lebanon (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.9% share, followed by Kuwait (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Iraq (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chestnut importing markets in MENA were Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 54% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +28.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
