Chicken Meat Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's chicken meat market decreased by -3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8.9%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Iran (X tons), with a combined 65% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average chicken meat yield in MENA dropped slightly to X kg per head, waning by -3.9% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 6.5%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

The global number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production reached X heads in 2021, picking up by 1.7% compared with the previous year. This number increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, chicken meat exports in MENA surged to X tons, picking up by 94% on the previous year. In general, exports showed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicken meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), making up a 4.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+43.9%), Saudi Arabia (+19.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +43.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Iran increased by +3.4 and +2.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest chicken meat supplier in MENA, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.2% share.

In Turkey, chicken meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+19.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of chicken meat imported in MENA rose sharply to X tons, surging by 15% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of chicken meat, namely Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, represented more than half of total import. Libya (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Kuwait (X tons) and Yemen (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 17% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Iraq ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Kuwait, Libya, Yemen and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Libya, with a CAGR of +4.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) and Libya ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
