Exports in MENA

In 2021, overseas shipments of chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,056%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chlorates, bromates and iodates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) represented the key exporter of chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates, making up 45% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Israel (8.4%), Saudi Arabia (8.2%), Iran (7.7%) and Jordan (4.7%). Morocco (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates exports, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012 to 2021. Israel (-6.2%), Egypt (-11.3%), Iran (-11.6%), Morocco (-17.2%), Saudi Arabia (-21.5%) and Jordan (-29.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia, Israel, Egypt and Iran increased by +44, +4.6, +3.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest chlorates, bromates and iodates supplying countries in MENA were Israel ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 66% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +53.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 586%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates decreased by -8.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chlorates, bromates and iodates imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) were the main importers of chlorates and perchlorates, bromates and perbromates, iodates and periodates, together creating 88% of total imports. Israel (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Oman ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 78% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +1.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
