Chlorides Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's chlorides market decreased by -7.5% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 27%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 84%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), namely Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Turkey (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Jordan (6.8%) and Saudi Arabia (5.2%). Kuwait (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest chlorides supplier in MENA, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Israel was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+25.4% per year) and Turkey (+10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 141% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), when their volume decreased by -51.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides imports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key importer of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), mixing up 33% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Turkey (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 53% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) in MENA, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 12% share.

In Saudi Arabia, chlorides imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+4.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-0.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
