In 2022, approx. X tons of chocolate and confectionery were exported in MENA; picking up by 26% against 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 62% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Egypt (7%). Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chocolate and confectionery exports from Turkey stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+10.8%), Egypt (+10.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+3 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -4.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 88% of total exports. Saudi Arabia and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5%.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +16.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2022, approx. X tons of chocolate and confectionery were imported in MENA; surging by 2.6% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of chocolate and confectionery, namely the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Libya, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Iran and Oman, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 43% of total imports. Israel, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, Algeria and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
