In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides, when their volume decreased by -75.3% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a sharp curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oxides and hydroxides exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. In 2021, Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the largest exporters of chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides in MENA, together resulting at near 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons), together comprising a 22% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Iran (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Morocco ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Tunisia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +31.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, imports of chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides in MENA surged to X tons, growing by 39% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, oxides and hydroxides imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 86% share of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +15.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
