In 2021, the MENA's cider, perry and mead market decreased by -42.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption saw a noticeable decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Production of Cider, Perry, Mead And Other Fermented Beverages in MENA

In value terms, cider, perry and mead production fell dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, exports of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in MENA contracted to X litres, waning by -3.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 412% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 154%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the key exporter of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X litres, which was approx. 47% of total exports in 2021. Turkey (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (16%) and Israel (5.3%). The following exporters - Palestine (X litres), Saudi Arabia (X litres) and Iran (X litres) - each amounted to a 6% share of total exports.

Exports from Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of -10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+11.2%), Saudi Arabia (+9.2%) and Palestine (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Israel (-1.0%), the United Arab Emirates (-5.5%) and Iran (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+18 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+2.4 p.p.), Israel (+2.4 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iran and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -18.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest cider, perry and mead supplier in MENA, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 12% share.

In Turkey, cider, perry and mead exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-13.8% per year) and Tunisia (-11.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per litre, declining by -16.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per litre), while Tunisia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Israel (X litres) and the United Arab Emirates (X litres) prevails in imports structure, together making up 83% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Libya (X litres), achieving a 6.8% share of total imports. Bahrain (X litres), Lebanon (X litres), Kuwait (X litres) and Turkey (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of +43.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Bahrain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 89% of total imports. Turkey, Libya, Kuwait and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.9%.

Libya, with a CAGR of +33.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per litre in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per litre), while Libya ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
