Clove Market Size in MENA
The MENA's clove market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -5.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +83.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Clove Production in MENA
In value terms, clove production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume decreased by 99.9%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Palestine (X kg) remains the largest clove producing country in MENA, accounting for 100% of total volume.
In Palestine, clove production contracted by an average annual rate of -59.1% over the period from 2012-2022.
Clove Exports
Exports in MENA
Clove exports declined dramatically to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -49.4% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 121%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, clove exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 143% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the main exporter of cloves in MENA, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (5.3%). Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to clove exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +7.6%. At the same time, Turkey (+42.3%), Kuwait (+28.5%), Oman (+22.3%), Palestine (+13.2%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +42.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Kuwait and Oman increased by +13, +1.8 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest clove supplier in MENA, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 5.7% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, clove exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+27.3% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-0.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 85% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Clove Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of cloves, when their volume decreased by -6.9% to X tons. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, clove imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the largest importer of cloves in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 49% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Iraq (9.1%) and Egypt (5%). The following importers - Iran (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+64.1%), Syrian Arab Republic (+30.6%), Morocco (+24.3%), Iran (+21.0%), Oman (+11.6%), Algeria (+9.6%), Turkey (+8.1%) and Saudi Arabia (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +64.1% from 2012-2022. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Iraq (+9 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+2.6 p.p.) and Iran (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -3.7% and -5.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cloves in MENA, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 8.2% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, clove imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+12.5% per year) and Egypt (+12.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
