In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the MENA's market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, when its value decreased by -0.8% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 90%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production of growth failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres was Morocco (X tons), comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by Turkey (X tons), with a 2.3% share of total production.
In Morocco, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
The average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres dropped to X kg per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. In general, the yield saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 8.2% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres production in MENA totaled X ha, leveling off at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, shipments abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -34.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 111%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 179%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the largest exporter of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in MENA, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 48% of total exports in 2022. Algeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Israel (16%) and Tunisia (9%). The following exporters - Turkey (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) - each finished at a 6.4% share of total exports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+19.0%) and Jordan (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Israel (-5.6%), Turkey (-6.7%) and Tunisia (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Jordan increased by +47, +16 and +3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier in MENA, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 13% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres expanded at an average annual rate of +40.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-13.8% per year) and Israel (-4.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+16.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Coconut, Abaca, Ramie and other Vegetable Textile Fibres
Imports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres imported in MENA declined to X tons, with a decrease of -10.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 104%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Iran (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) represented the key importers of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, together mixing up 96% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +57.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in MENA, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 12% share.
In Morocco, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres expanded at an average annual rate of +58.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+2.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+14.8% per year).

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
